Juan Martin Del Potro and Madison Keys have both pulled out of the Australian Open.

The duo were hopeful of competing in Melbourne but have opted to skip the event, as they look to recover from their respective injury woes.

Davis Cup champion and Olympic silver medallist Del Potro, 28, confirmed he would miss the event as he continues to recover from wrist injuries he suffered in the last few years.

A statement read: ‘Juan Martin Del Potro has confirmed that he has not had sufficient recovery time and will be withdrawing from the Auckland Classic and the Australian Open.’

Keys will also miss the trip to Melbourne after undergoing surgery on her wrist.

The 21-year-old said: ‘Three days after the year-end WTA Championships, I had minor arthroscopic surgery on my left wrist.

The procedure was very short, did not involve any tendon issues and went very well.

‘I just don’t want to rush back and need to take my time to be fully ready to perform my best on the court.’
