Australian Open organisers announce prize money increase to £29.3m for 2017

Australian Open organisers will now offer £29.3million (50 million Australian dollars) in prize money for the 2017 event, including £2.17m for the winners.

The tournament will pay out 14% more prize money from 2016 and offers £29,368 to any loser in the first round of the year’s opening Grand Slam.

Tournament director Craig Tiley said: ‘We are committed to further improving the pay and conditions on the international tennis tour to ensure every professional tennis player is properly compensated.

It kicks off on January 16, with Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Rafa Nadal all making their long-awaited returns from various injury problems.

Andy Murray will head into his first Slam as the No. 1 seed as one of six Brits in the main singles draw, while Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber will be looking to defend their titles in Melbourne.

The US Open currently has the largest prize money for a Grand Slam tournament, with a £37.5m purse and offering £2.83m to the winner.
