Granit Xhaka made his return to Borussia Monchengladbach on Monday evening as the Bundesliga club staged an official farewell for the Arsenal midfielder.

The 24-year-old joined the Gunners in a £35 million deal in May but was denied the chance to say goodbye to the German club’s supporters as their season had already finished.

Xhaka had spent four years at Monchengladbach, making 140 appearances in all competitions for the club.

And ahead of Monchengladbach’s clash with Wolfsburg on Monday, Xhaka walked onto the pitch to receive a warm reception from the supporters.

But Monchengladbach’s official Twitter account couldn’t resist a little dig at the midfielder’s alarming disciplinary record during his time at the club.

In his four seasons with the German side, Xhaka received a staggering 48 yellow cards and six red cards.

And Monchengladbach jokingly suggested that Xhaka should have been presented with a giant yellow card for his efforts.

Our suggestion of a giant yellow card wasn't used we see 😒
