Andy Murray has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for the third time.

The Scot picked up the trophy on Sunday night, capping off a brilliant 12 months for the tennis star.

Murray won Wimbledon for the second time, was runner-up at both Roland Garros and the Australian Open, and finally became world number one in the final weeks of the year.

The 29-year-old also beat long-time rival Novak Djokovic to win the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals event, which cemented his place as the top tennis player in the world.

Murray won the award last year as well, and becomes the first person to ever win it in consecutive years.

His other victory came in 2013, which also happened to be when he won Wimbledon for the first time.

He wasn’t in attendance at the ceremony, which was held on Sunday night, and picked up the prize via a video-link from his training camp in Miami.

Second place went to Alistair Brownlee, who became the first man to defend the Olympic triathlon gold title.

Third place went to equestrian Nick Skelton, who finally won an individual Olympic title at his seventh attempt, at the age of 58.
