Wenger backs Ozil to win 2016 Ballon d’Or

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has backed his in-form German midfielder Mesut Ozil to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award next year.

With Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo vying for the 2015 Ballon d’Or accolade tonight in Zurich, Switzerland, the Frenchman has admitted he would love to see Ozil who has provided 16 assists and four goals for the Gunners this season to win the award in 2016 but said he is not a fan of the individual accolade.

“I wish, as I told you I am not a big fan of that [award],” Wenger said of his disdain about the world best footballer of the year individual gong.

“What is important is we are a team sport, and it’s not logical to me to just encourage individual effort.

“We live already in a society where it’s all about individualism. Coming from a team sport going to that as well is to me a little bit contradictory to what is the route of our sport.”
