NFF confirm the death of Former Nigeria coach and captain Stephen Keshi

Image
Stephen Keshi is one of only two men to have won the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and coach. The African football fraternity is mourning the death of former Nigeria captain and coach Stephen Keshi from a cardiac arrest at the age of 54. Keshi died suddenly in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Benin City in southern Nigeria. He was planning to return to his base in the United States later that day. His friends say that Keshi was in good health and had no previous heart problems. After winning 64 Nigeria caps as a central defender between 1981-95, Keshi had three stints in charge of Togo before taking over as Nigeria coach in 2011. He also coached Mali between 2008-10. He led Nigeria to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title, defeating Burkina Faso in the final in South Africa before guiding them to the second round of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Along with Egypt's Mahmoud El-Gohary, Keshi is one of only two men to have won the Africa Cup of Nations as both a player ...

United States rebounds versus Costa Rica with 4-0 win at Copa

Image
Clint Dempsey had a goal and two assists, and the United States rebounded from its opening loss in the Copa America with a convincing 4-0 victory over Costa Rica on Tuesday night. Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Graham Zusi also scored as the U.S. moved into prime position to grab one of two spots in the knockout round coming out of Group A in South America's championship. The Americans take on Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday night. It was quite a response to days of questions after the U.S. allowed a goal off a corner kick and committed a costly hand ball in a  2-0 loss to Colombia on Friday night. Costa Rica, which  played a scoreless tie against Paraguay  in its Copa opener on Saturday in Florida, looked sluggish for long stretches of the first half and was unable to recover. It played without key defender Kendall Waston after he got a red card in the previous game. The loss to Colombia ramped up criticism of U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who said last month th...

Colombia and James Rodriguez hold on to beat Paraguay

Image
James Rodriguez scored a goal and set up another in the first 30 minutes, and Colombia clinched a berth in the Copa America quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Paraguay on Tuesday night. Colombia became the first team to secure a spot in the knockout stage of the tournament with stellar goaltending from David Ospina and another dynamic performance from Rodriguez, who shook off a shoulder injury that made his availability a game-time decision at the Rose Bowl. The Real Madrid midfielder propelled Colombia to their second win in two matches, following  a 2-0 victory over the United States  last week. Victor Ayala scored Paraguay's first goal of the Copa America in the 71st minute on a long shot past Ospina, who made a handful of jaw-dropping saves to keep Colombia ahead. Despite a few defensive struggles, the world's third-ranked team has lived up to its billing so far stateside with a fluid, attacking game built around Rodriguez, who played despite hurting his shoulder la...

Spain stunned in loss to Georgia as Greece beat Australia in friendlies

Spain  saw their 11-game unbeaten streak end in a  1-0 loss  to  Georgia  in a friendly in Getafe on Tuesday night. In their final warm-up before Euro 2016,  La Roja were undone by a Tornike Okriashvili goal in the 40th minute. Jaba Jigauri's pass across the face of goal got past David De Gea and Okriashvili had the simplest of finishes. There was a scary moment shortly after half-time when Georgia goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili clashed heads with Spain's Sergio Busquets. Revishvili was bloodied and had to leave the game, but Busquets played on for another 20 minutes before being replaced by Pedro. The loss was Spain's first since a 2-0 setback against Netherlands in a friendly on March 31, 2015. Spain are ranked sixth in the world by FIFA, while Georgia are 137th and did not qualify for the Euros. Gerard Pique and Spain fell to Georgia on Tuesday. Ioannis Maniatis scored a stunning goal from well inside his own half as  Greece  beat  Aus...
